Daily Juice: Mandarin Madness

When I think of mandarin oranges I always picture those little tins with the pull tops stacked up in my grandmother’s pantry. The oranges were packed in syrup.

Heavy Syrup.

And they were delicious to my 7 yr old palate. Truth be told they would be delicious to my 44 yr old palate as well but I steer clear, way clear. Instead, I’ll buy the big bag of easy to peel mandarin oranges whenever I see them at the store. Putting them into juice will net you a less tart citrus addition than its sunshine-y cousin of the Navel Orange. It is a rich flavor, especially when combined with other juices.

This recipe is all sweet and sassy.  If you want to green it up a little more and also add some liquid (it can be a little thickish) then add a half cucumber. The “green” factor at this point comes only from the addition of green apple and kiwi. . Even so, it’s healthy and delicious…and it is not in heavy syrup, so there’s that.

Sweet and Sassy

1 (or 2) Kiwi- peeled

2 mandarin oranges – peeled (add more if you’d like)

1 green apple

(optional: half cucumber)

Daily Juice: Darlin Kiwi Clementine…

Isn’t she lovely? Isn’t she beautiful?

It’s fun to say too… Carrot/Kiwi/Clementine.  Try it. Say it out loud, it’s fun.

Once again, feel free to exchange an orange for a clementine but it won’t be as much fun to say out loud.

Carrot/Kiwi/Orange… blech, that falls flat. Stick to clementine.

DARLIN KIWI CLEMENTINE

1 (or 2) kiwi

1 (or 2) clementine

1 carrot

I suggest you start with the kiwi and juice it very slowly to keep as many seeds out as possible (depending on your juicer.) Using 1 kiwi and 1 clementine yielded about 10oz of juice.  If you want more ounce-age and less sweetness then add another carrot. It changes the taste a quite a bit though, makes it more earthy. Whatever floats ya.

Daily Juice: Black Cherry Espresso Smoothie

It’s been a long day, folks. I took all four of my children with me to the DMV first and then to the Aquarium immediately following. I wanted a pick me up but coffee didn’t sound great. I know, in THEORY I’m supposed to juice something really savory but you know what? My body said, “gimme sumthin sweet, baby…” and I said, “ok, body…you got it”  I talk to myself like that.

For that reason I got out my trusty Blendtec and whipped us up a sweet little sumthin’ sumthin.

Black Cherry/Almond Milk Espresso Smoothie

1 Cup Frozen Black Cherries
2 shots Espresso (or 1/2 cup brewed coffee)
4-6oz Vanilla Almond Milk
2 tsp chocolate sauce OR make your own using sweetened cocoa powder and water with a little sugar.
Crushed Ice

Directions

Always place liquids into your blender first followed by frozen cherries. Blend until smooth. Add crushed ice to get to the correct consistency.

Serving Size: Makes 14-16oz

Daily Juice: The 3 C

Lovely mildly sweet taste. This one can be sweeter if you add a 2nd clementine to the mix. I like clementine because they’re a bit less overwhelming in the citrus department than full on oranges but you can substitute if you’d like.

2 small/medium carrots

1 small cucumber (unpeeled, I used an English cucumber today…)

1 (or 2 depending on your taste) peeled Clementines

Daily Juice: Going Green…

All Green

2 cups Kale

2 cups Spinach

1 cucumber

1 cup parsley

2 stalk celery

1 green apple

Don’t be afraid of the All Green! Now, I’m a bit of a wimp so I like to add one small green apple to the mix to balance out the kale. You can leave that out if you feel it’s too sweet. I find it just takes the edge off and you know, it’s ‘green’ ish…

Daily Juice: Jan 2, 2012 “The Big C”

This is an earthy way to get your Vitamin C…

The Big C

2 large Carrots

1 Sweet Potato (peeled)

1 (or 2) clementine Orange

This yields 12-14oz in my Breville Juicer. If it comes up a little short add more clementines. The bottom of the glass might be a bit gritty (hello, root vegetable!) so stir well…

Daily Juice: Jan 1, 2012 Sweet Tart

20120101-131329.jpg
This one is a little tart but a lot of yum…

2 small green apples
2 stalks celery
1/2 lemon
1/2 cucumber
1 cup cilantro

In my juicer this yields 12oz juice. Yours might differ. Just start here and see where to take it. Like the flavor but need more volume? Add cucumber or celery. Need more taste? Add cilantro/apple or lemon.

Master your Cleanse….

Cleanse is a soothing word, isn’t it? Cleanse. Say it out loud. “Cleanssssssssse.”

By show of hands how many of us have heard this lovely word flow fluidly through the lips of a friend this year past year? And now,  how many of us have spit this word through our own gritted teeth a couple of weeks later?

Yes, I did a Cleanse in 2011, sort of. Any sort of strict “diet” I undertake is always going to be a “sort of” diet. This is where my rule follower friends will say, “well THAT’S why you didn’t get the full benefit!” to which I say, “poppycock” and I don’t mean “poppycock” as in the delicious popcorn caramel treat although I love that sort of poppycock much more than the strict diet type.

I like the IDEA of a “cleanse.” I like the idea of flushing toxins from my system and cleaning out my inner workings just as I like the IDEA of having really organized closets. I know that with really organized closets my life would run much more smoothly from season to season. No more shouts of, “mom, where’s my coat!” and “do we have any more toilet paper?”

The trouble is that I cannot be trusted to  actually follow through and get my closets in order. Since I am not stupid wealthy no one else is delegated to organize them so bottom line is that if I WANT organized closets I’m just going to have to get off my computer and do it myself. I totally admit that.

Which brings me back to my “Cleanse.” I followed it pretty well for the first day (read: 4 hours of the first day) but after that I got dizzy because I have this blood sugar issue so I ate something. The next day was better but I got extremely cranky so for the health and safety of my children I ate something. At this point I realized something important. Not everyone should “Cleanse.” Or at the very least, not all of us should cleanse while parenting small children.

This post is in NO WAY meant to dissuade you from undertaking a Cleanse. If you have the time and inclination then it can be a remarkable experience. I will say that the medical jury is still divided on Cleansing for the most part. It may or may not do what you want or expect it to do. You might be hoping the Cleanse will be a smiling Martha Stewart rolling up her sleeves and digging into your linen closet but in reality it’s just you, standing here in a pile of towels, cussing and crying.

Either way, if you do decide to do a cleanse I’m going to give you my best advice. This is not nutritional advice, nor is it practical “cleansing” advice.  This is relational advice, social media sharing advice, based upon feedback from very reliable sources, namely, my Twitter feed.

  • First off, when you decide to do a Cleanse it is acceptable to let your friends know about it. In fact, it is preferable to let us know so that we can chalk up any violent outbursts to your intake of lemons and cayenne pepper for the next few days.
  • It is also perfectly acceptable to post photos before you begin of your big stack of lemons. They look very pretty.
  • Do not post photos every single day of your lemons unless it’s to cuss out that stack of lemons. We’ll help you.
  • Do not give us a play by-play about your bowel movements or saline flushes. TMI.
  • You don’t have to hole up in your home while you’re cleansing but really think about it before you agree to attend food or drink oriented gatherings unless you have an iron will self-control. As Socrates might say, “Know Thyself.”  If you can’t be around donuts without going completely mental then spare yourself the pain. As your friends, we will understand.
  • Do not at any point say things like “I feel AMAZING!”  Some of us have seen you in person. We know you’re really feeling more like this right now (and there is no shame in that):

All this being said, as you proceed into this great endeavor I wish you bolstered fortitude, abundant produce sources and unlimited patience in your quest for health.  Call me if you need help folding that pile of  towels when you’re all done.

Daily Juice…

Pretty pictures, that’s all I’m offering. Well, I’m offering pretty pictures most days and recipes to create the juices in these pictures. I’m not a dietician, I’m not a nutritionist. I make no promises on health benefits. I’m just making juices in mah kitchen and I’m showing my handiwork.

If you like ’em, I want to hear about it. If you hate ’em I want to hear that too. Just be nice about it. I mean, it’s juice, not chocolate.
